Resting in the Lord
When the psalmist says, “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7, NKJV), he’s not talking about physical rest that involves taking a break from activity, relaxing, napping, or stopping to gather strength to continue or complete some physical undertaking. Rest in the Lord refers to a spiritual rest from confusion, worry, stress, useless human effort, and a break from all internal, external, mortal, and spiritual enemies. The Hebrew word translated as “rest” means “to be at peace,” “to be still,” “to be quiet or calm.”
The Bible promises us rest though in Christ. “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light” (Matthew 11:28–30, NLT).
“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Is. 40:29-31
"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” Ps. 91:1
So how do we rest in the Lord? To rest in Him means to depend fully on his provision and plan even in a storm of chaos. We must cast all of our worry and doubt on the Lord. Lay it at the cross and don’t pick it back up. Quiet your soul before Him. Go to your prayer closest for one on one time with the Lord. Let him speak to you, minister to your heart and soul.
Worship the Lord and enter into His presence. Let your body, heart and mind be at rest in His presence. When worshiping in the Spirit, we can not be selfish. The Holy Spirit will intercede on our behalf! We put ourself aside and praise the Lord who is, and was, and is to come!
As a society, we are programmed to keep going. We wear our overtime and sleeplessness like a badge of honor. But that is not how the Lord designed it to be. He created the Sabbath for rest, He Himself rested! If the all powerful, Lord of the universe needs rest, so do you!
You will have to train yourself to rest in the Lord. Start with 5 minutes a day if you need to. Abide in His presence and let the peace, Shalom, of the Lord overtake you. Increase your time and find true rest from this crazy world.
