The names of God

Not to long ago I was praying and I heard "I am Elohim. All you need to do is ask." I had no clue what Elohim meant! So I went to my walking, talking Hebrew dictionary, Corey. He said Elohim means mighty one, the supreme one. Elohim emphasizes the the power and might of God. He is might to heal and save. This got me thinking about the song Because of Who You Are. It goes:

Because of who you are I give you glory
Because of who you are I give you praise
Lord because of who you are I will lift my voice and say
Lord I worship you because of who you are

Jehova Jireh, you're my Provider
Jehova Nissi, you reign in victory
Jehovah Shalom, my Prince of Peace
Lord I worship you because of who you are

This song often is playing in the background of my brain. The bible mentions numerous names that describe the characteristics of God. When we are worshipping or praying, I can call on our Lord by not just his name, but a characteristic with his name. This gives us power to remind not just ourselves, but the devil too, how powerful and mighty God is! Below is something I found online that I have added to. The original articles are at the bottom.

EL, ELOAH [el, el-oh-ah]:
God "mighty, strong, prominent" (Nehemiah 9:17Psalm 139:19) – etymologically, El appears to mean “power” and “might” (Genesis 31:29). El is associated with other qualities, such as integrity (Numbers 23:19), jealousy (Deuteronomy 5:9), and compassion (Nehemiah 9:31), but the root idea of “might” remains.

ELOHIM [el-oh-heem]: God “Creator, Mighty and Strong” (Genesis 17:7Jeremiah 31:33) – the plural form of Eloah. From the Bible’s first sentence, the superlative nature of God’s power is evident as God (Elohim) speaks the world into existence (Genesis 1:1). He is the supreme creator, mighty to save and heal. Elohim is our strong tower.

EL SHADDAI [el-shah-dahy]: “God Almighty,” “The Mighty One of Jacob” (Genesis 49:24Psalm 132:2,5) – speaks to God’s ultimate power over all.

ADONAI [ˌædɒˈnaɪ; ah-daw-nahy]: “Lord” (Genesis 15:2Judges 6:15) – used in place of YHWH, which was thought by the Jews to be too sacred to be uttered by sinful men. In the Old Testament, YHWH is more often used in God’s dealings with His people, while Adonai is used more when He deals with the Gentiles.

YHWH / YAHWEH / JEHOVAH [yah-way / ji-hoh-veh]: “LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4Daniel 9:14) – strictly speaking, the only proper name for God. Translated in English Bibles “LORD” (all capitals) to distinguish it from Adonai, “Lord.” The revelation of the name is given to Moses “I Am who I Am” (Exodus 3:14). This name specifies an immediacy, a presence. Yahweh is present, accessible, near to those who call on Him for deliverance (Psalm 107:13), forgiveness (Psalm 25:11) and guidance (Psalm 31:3).

YAHWEH-JIREH [yah-way-ji-reh]: "The Lord Will Provide" (Genesis 22:14) – the name memorialized by Abraham when God provided the ram to be sacrificed in place of Isaac. Jehovah Jireh, my provider.

YAHWEH-RAPHA [yah-way-raw-faw]: "The Lord Who Heals" (Exodus 15:26) – “I am Jehovah who heals you” both in body and soul. In body, by preserving from and curing diseases, and in soul, by pardoning iniquities.  Isaiah 53:5, “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed.”

YAHWEH-NISSI [yah-way-nee-see]: "The Lord Our Banner" (Exodus 17:15), where banner is understood to be a rallying place. This name commemorates the desert victory over the Amalekites in Exodus 17.  Exodus 17:15–16 tells us, “Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. He said, ‘Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.’” “The Lord is my Banner” is the translation of the Hebrew Yahweh-NissiThat name proclaims God’s leadership and the protection of His people. The Lord is our Banner in that He is the One under whom we unite. He is our Savior. We are rescued by Him and identified in Him.

YAHWEH-M'KADDESH [yah-way-meh-kad-esh]: "The Lord Who Sanctifies, Makes Holy" (Leviticus 20:8Ezekiel 37:28) – God makes it clear that He alone, not the law, can cleanse His people and make them holy. Exodus 31:13 — "Speak also to the children of Israel, saying, 'Most assuredly you shall keep my Sabbaths: for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations; that you may know that I am Yahweh who sanctifies you [YHWH-M'Kaddesh].'" (WEB) Leviticus 20:7,8 — "'Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am Yahweh your God. You shall keep my statutes, and do them. I am Yahweh who sanctifies you [YHWH-M'Kaddesh]."

YAHWEH-SHALOM [yah-way-shah-lohm]: "The Lord Our Peace" (Judges 6:24) – the name given by Gideon to the altar he built after the Angel of the Lord assured him he would not die as he thought he would after seeing Him. He is the Prince of Peace. He is the one who provides a peace beyond understanding.

YAHWEH-ELOHIM [yah-way-el-oh-him]: "LORD God" (Genesis 2:4Psalm 59:5) – a combination of God’s unique name YHWH and the generic word for “God” signifying that He is the Lord who is God. This emphasizes that he is the mighty and powerful Lord of all, King of kings.

YAHWEH-TSIDKENU [yah-way-tzid-kay-noo]: "The Lord Our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 33:16) – As with YHWH-M’Kaddesh, it is God alone who provides righteousness (from the Hebrew word tsidkenu) to man, ultimately in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, who became sin for us “that we might become the Righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

YAHWEH-ROHI [yah-way-roh-hee]: "The Lord Our Shepherd" (Psalm 23:1) – After David pondered his relationship as a shepherd to his sheep, he realized that was exactly the relationship God had with him, and so he declares, “Yahweh-Rohi is my Shepherd. I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).

YAHWEH-SHAMMAH [yah-way-sham-mahw]: "The Lord Is There” (Ezekiel 48:35) – the name ascribed to Jerusalem and the Temple there, indicating that the once-departed glory of the Lord (Ezekiel 8—11) had returned (Ezekiel 44:1-4).

YAHWEH-SABAOTH [yah-way-sah-bah-ohth]: "The Lord of Hosts" (Isaiah 1:24Psalm 46:7) – Hosts means “hordes,” both of angels and of men. He is Lord of the host of heaven and of the inhabitants of the earth, of Jews and Gentiles, of rich and poor, master and slave. The name is expressive of the majesty, power, and authority of God and shows that He is able to accomplish what He determines to do.

EL ELYON [el-el-yohn]: “Most High" (Deuteronomy 26:19) – derived from the Hebrew root for “go up” or “ascend,” so the implication is of that which is the very highest. El Elyon denotes exaltation and speaks of absolute right to lordship. He is the Lord most high! There are none higher.

EL ROI [el-roh-ee]: "God of Seeing" (Genesis 16:13) – the name ascribed to God by Hagar, alone and desperate in the wilderness after being driven out by Sarah (Genesis 16:1-14). When Hagar met the Angel of the Lord, she realized she had seen God Himself in a theophany. She also realized that El Roi saw her in her distress and testified that He is a God who lives and sees all.

EL-OLAM [el-oh-lahm]: "Everlasting God" (Psalm 90:1-3) – God’s nature is without beginning or end, free from all constraints of time, and He contains within Himself the very cause of time itself. “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:2).

EL-GIBHOR [el-ghee-bohr]: “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) – the name describing the Messiah, Christ Jesus, in this prophetic portion of Isaiah. As a powerful and mighty warrior, the Messiah, the Mighty God, will accomplish the destruction of God’s enemies and rule with a rod of iron (Revelation 19:15).

Alpha and Omega: Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the “Alpha and Omega” in Revelation 1:821:6; and 22:13. Alpha and omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. In English he would be saying, " I am A to Z." John 1:1 tells us that "In the beginning was the Word…and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." Jesus was in the beginning as the Word of God. And He is God's final word for all eternity.

Attiyq Youm: Ancient of Days Isaiah 46:9-10 says, "Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.’"

El Chay: Living God  “My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God” (Psalm 84:2). Your God, the Living God, is real and powerful. When you acknowledge Him as El Chay, you understand that all the little gods with a lowercase “g”—the wood and stone idols of the past and the entertainments, enticements, and stock-market tickers of today—are not worthy of worship. The little gods, “cannot speak; they must be carried, because they cannot go by themselves...They cannot do evil, nor can they do any good” (Jeremiah 10:5). The Living God, El Chay, transcends culture and time. He speaks to you through His word and walks with you through your struggles.

El Chuwl: The God who gave you birth Isaiah 43:1-3b says, "But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.'" God is saying, "I made you, I saved you, I'm going to take care of you." God has made you for a purpose And He's going to take care of you.

El Deah: The God of Knowledge  God is omniscience. He knows everything. God is the God of all knowledge. From the beginning to the end, he knows EVERYTHING. Romans 11:34 says, “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?”

Jehovah-Shammah: The Lord is there "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?" Psalms 139:7 God is omnipresent. He is everywhere.

Jehovah-Tsuri: The Lord our rock  “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm 18:2). He is permanent, faithful, and protective. He is the firm foundation for your life, your hiding place in trouble, your shelter in the storm. Jesus is also pictured as the spiritual rock that saw the Israelites through their long trek to the Promised Land (See 1 Corinthians 10:1-5.) and as the stone the builders rejected that has become the cornerstone of the Church. (See Matthew 21:42.) He has made His followers into “living stones.” Scripture says: “you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5).

Logos: The Word “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Jesus is the fulfillment of the words of prophecy written in the Old Testament, the Word made flesh in the New Testament, the Word of hope for all who believe in His Second Coming, and the eternal Word securing the promise of Heaven.

Jesus: The Lord Saves “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

Ma'on: Our dwelling place “Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations” (Psalm 90:1Moses called God His dwelling place. Our real home is found only in Ma’on. This was true for Moses and his generation, and it is true more than 3,000 years later. It is true for the homeless and it is true for the mansion dweller.

Messiah: The Anointed One “He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated, the Christ)” (John 1:41). When Andrew told Simon (later called Peter), “We have found the Messiah,” he believed Jesus to be the anointed, or chosen one. Scripture had promised a deliverer for the Jewish people. (See Isaiah 42:161:1-3Psalm 1622Daniel 9.) The disciples learned over the course of Jesus’ ministry that the salvation they expected—delivery from Roman masters, and an earthly kingdom—would be far exceeded.

Immanuel: God with us Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and she will call Him Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14).

Lion of Judah: Jesus is called the Lion of Judah who has triumphed. Jesus has triumphed over temptation and sin, over pain and suffering, over fear, over death and even over the Devil himself. Jesus is the Lion who retreats before nothing! "Then one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals" (Revelation 5:5).
