Intentional Prayer
Being intentional in prayer is important. We can cry out to God in a moment of weakness “Help me!” And he will know what we mean. But when we call out intentionally and name the issue, we are not just asking for help, we are telling the enemy that we see what he is doing and recognize it. We are telling God that we won’t be swayed by the lies of the enemy any longer. This is so important in dealing with spiritual attacks that manifest in our bodies! Such as depression, anxiety, mental disorders, chronic pain disease.
With intention prayer we show God our emptiness so he can fill us with his fullness. James 5:16 urges, make your prayers effectual and fervent, which creates tremendous power.
But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Matthew 6:6-8
In this verse we are urged to plan time with God in prayer, being intentional. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Never stop praying.
Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,” Ephesians 6:18
“When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you.” Jeremiah 29:12
How can we be intentional?
- Ask for help. Name the specific issues. Ask others to join you in prayer for the specific issue.
- Pray God’s word. Search for Bible verse specific to your need and pray them. Claim them.
- Write your prayers. Use a prayer journal. Not only will this help you focus, you can look back and see how God has moved on your life.
- Set special time aside to pray. Use an alarm if you need to. Wake up 30 minutes early to do a devotional and prayer.
- Patiently wait upon the Lord. If you don’t know what to pray, spend time in his presence silently listening.
- Keep it simple at first. You don’t need a wordy prayer for God to know your heart. Lay your needs before the throne and bask in his presence.
- Having an ongoing dialogue of prayer through out the day. Start and end your day with prayer and thanksgiving.
- Meditate on the word. Choose one verse a day to ponder. Dive deeper into its meaning.
- Pray for others, not just yourself.
